Kia publishes prices for the next-gen Niro, which start at €31,790. The SUV, still available in hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric, changes everything aesthetically but retains an attractive price/equipment ratio.
The first Kia Niro of the name was ahead of its time with its fully electrified range including hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric. A winning bet that earned him a certain commercial success. On the other hand, the South Korean SUV displayed a consensual and conservative design where its most demanded competitors redoubled their robustness or visual aggressiveness. The second Niro of the name takes up the three types of electrification of its predecessor, but it adopts a much more assertive style, inspired by the HabaNiro concept of 2019. It grows a little to be more habitable (+ 6.5 cm in length with 4.42 m) while remaining within the average of the segment. The new Niro does not forget to maintain an attractive price positioning, especially since the Seoul brand offers, as often, well-stocked standard equipment.
New features for the Niro EV
With an equivalent powertrain, the base price of the Kia Niro nevertheless increases by €2,600 in hybrid, €1,800 in plug-in hybrid and €1,000 in electric. In the latter case, only the largest battery offered for the first generation is included. With a capacity of 64.8 kWh, it still powers a 204 hp engine and allows the SUV to travel 463 km in the WLTP cycle according to Kia’s estimates (approval in progress), i.e. 8 km more than before. The new Niro EV also benefits from an increased towing capacity, from 300 to 750 kg. A “one-pedal” driving mode appears, as does the possibility of recharging an external device from the car with a power of 3 kW. Bigger than a Renault Mégane E-Tech Electric, smaller than a Volkswagen ID.4, and not playing the premium card like a Volvo XC40 Recharge, the Niro EV has no direct competition. It starts at €41,990 and benefits from the maximum ecological bonus of €6,000.
The very attractive plug-in hybrid
The 183 hp Niro plug-in hybrid (previously 141 hp), with an entry price of €37,990, asks €7,010 less than a 225 hp Peugeot 3008 Hybrid. Both benefit until June 30, 2022 from an ecological bonus of €1,000. Kia announces a WLTP “zero emission” range of between 57 and 60 km for its latest addition, which also has a “green zone” mode automatically switching to electric mode in certain places, near a school or a hospital for example. Finally, the new Niro hybrid offers 141 hp like the previous one, but Kia announces (without quantifying them for the moment) better acceleration capacities. Offered from €31,790, it will have among its competitors the slightly more imposing Renault Austral E-Tech 160 hp, whose prices have not yet been communicated. But the price of the Asian model places it, for example, between the 150 hp petrol and diesel versions of a Seat Ateca.
