June is a bracelet that measures the sun exposure of women who wear it and warns them before they get sunburned. Free mobile applications provide this kind of service.
“June” is the name of the new bracelet whose mission is to save your skin. This smart jewel developed by the French start-up Netatmo measures exposure to the sun and subsequently provides advice to better protect yourself from the effects of the sun on a daily basis. So, is this the end of sunburn?
An anti-sunburn bracelet
This tool works as follows. The stone that adorns the bracelet measures the exposure to the sun and sends all the information to an application for smartphones and tablets. By consulting its application (or its notifications), the user is warned of the risk of sunburn to which she is exposed. Thanks to this information received in real time, she knows instantly when to put on sunscreen and especially when to stop exposing herself. This bracelet has just been awarded at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas (CES) in the categories “Wearable Technologies” (ready-to-wear technologies) and “Tech for a better World” (technology for a better world). Regarding its price, June will be offered in three colors and will cost $ 99 (around € 73). Its manufacturer expects to be able to start delivering its bracelets in the second quarter of 2014.
Dermatologist alert tools
However, this anti-sunburn bracelet does not only have aficionados, especially on the side of medical specialists in the skin. For Dr Catherine Oliveres-Ghouti, dermatologist in Paris contacted by why actor, this “magic” bracelet, which is not yet marketed, is supposed to give, with “a magic stone”, the UV Index. However, as this doctor reminds us, “this UV index is already broadcast every day in summer by radio and TV at the time of national weather and beaches. And it also allows, of course, to know which protection to use according to the announced index. Thus, the higher it is, the more one should use a high protection cream. “
Protecting yourself from the sun, a matter of will?
In addition, Dr Catherine Oliveres-Ghouti also slightly tempers the enthusiasm of the designers of the product about the innovative character of the product. “In France, we have the” SOLEIL RISK “smartphone application created by the National Union of Dermatologists-Venereologists (SNDV) in partnership with METEO FRANCE, she confides. It allows you to determine the nature of your skin and its sensitivity to the sun, but also to have the UV index of the place where you are (with weather in France and geolocation). In addition, if they have a dermatological or sun allergy problem, with this application, women (but also men) can find the dermatologist closest to them. This is thanks to the directory of French dermatologists which is available on “SOLEIL RISK”. And in the end, the official SNDV application costs 0 Euro ”, adds this dermatologist.
“In any case, when you want to protect yourself from the sun effectively, you can do it, it’s all about wanting! », She concludes.
In 2010, nearly 1,600 people died from melanoma, nearly 70% of which is the result of overexposure to the sun.
