At the beginning of the year, an Inserm study suggested a link between consumption of ultra-processed foods and cancer. A new study, which has just been published in theAmerican journal of gastroenterology suggests that the consumption of these ultra-processed foods (industrial breads and brioches, chocolate bars, snack cookies, food preparations with hydrogenated oil, sodas and flavored sweet drinks …) is at the origin of digestive disorders and more particularly of irritable bowel syndrome.
“The consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPF) has increased over the past decades and raises concerns about potential negative health effects. Our aim was to assess the association between this consumption and 4 gastrointestinal disorders. functional: irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, diarrhea and functional dyspepsia (pain in the digestive system) “ underline the nutritional epidemiology researchers at the University of Paris-XIII.
10% of participants suffer from irritable bowel
They analyzed the dietary data of more than 33,000 participants in the cohort. NutriNet-Health, who completed at least three 24-hour food records. The participants were mainly women (76.4%) with an average age of 50.4 years.
Several participants reported suffering from disorders affecting the digestive system:
-
10.5% of irritable bowel syndrome
5.4% functional constipation
3.9% functional diarrhea
1.1% functional dyspepsia.
The researchers point out, however, that further longitudinal studies will be needed to confirm these results.
