ISNI (Inter Syndicat National des Internes), the main union of interns in France, is calling a strike on Tuesday. In question the reform of the third cycle of medical studies, the boarding school, at the end of the sixth year. The organization calls in particular for an extension of the training period from 4 to 5 years in three specialties: cardiology, hepato-gastroenterology (diseases of the digestive tract and the liver) and nephrology (kidney health).
The texts presented in November by the Government should lead to a decree of the Council of State submitted on May 1. At the end of January, the ISNI had already expressed reservations about its content and asked for guarantees on the status of interns.
Supervised autonomy
The reform provides for the transition to supervised autonomy, a specific status for the third cycle of medical studies, which will allow interns to gain independence. The ministry indicates that “the 3rd cycle student will be able to practice acts alone, under the responsibility of his internship supervisor, with the possibility of having recourse without delay, at any time, to the intervention of a supervising practitioner”. Also according to the ministry, this new statute will be accompanied by a “revalued remuneration”, aligned with that of the assistants of beginning hospitals. Measures which do not convince either the interns, nor the liberal doctors, of which the first union, the CSMF (Confederation of French Medical Syndicates), supports the strike.
