It’s a certainty. Confirmed by a parliamentary report in January 2008, then by the High Committee for Public Health (HCSP) in January 2009, which stated: “The concentrations of many pollutants are higher there than outside. In town, as in the countryside, those who still imagine themselves safe from attack once the door to their home has been closed are seriously mistaken: there are in particular 300 chemical products in homes! Even cleaning can make you sick! Because we use more and more very sophisticated, too aggressive and concentrated household products.
Why this contamination?
Building materials, furniture, paints, products maintenance and do-it-yourself products, cosmetics, etc., all everyday consumer products contain chemical substances which are easily released into the atmosphere of homes. “Our homes being better and better insulated, due to energy savings, we are more exposed to it because the air is more confined there”, underlines Ludivine Ferrer, director of Asef, which brings together nearly 2,500 doctors concerned about these issues. And this, even if it is well ventilated. Insecticides, for example, stay suspended in theair of the house than outside. And when you put on hairspray in the morning, you spray your house with dreaded volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
