November 17, 2006 – Now that the public is well aware of their virtues, dark chocolate and whole grains are destined to become the next big thing in the supermarket.
At least that’s one of the trends that emerged from the annual Grocery Innovations Canada, a trade fair recently its seventh version held in Toronto.
Examples? General Mills, one of the giants of the food industry, has changed all of its grain products to include whole grains. Kraft and Kellogg’s do the same with their healthy crackers, chips, bagels and breads. Long live fibers!
Dark chocolate is also in high demand, partly because of its health benefits. Its high content of flavonoids – antioxidants – could indeed help prevent cardiovascular disorders.
Dark chocolate is therefore intended to be incorporated into various products. These include Nestlé’s hot (dark) chocolate mix, a Lactantia dark chocolate flavored cheesecake and an all-natural peanut butter dubbed Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Dream.
Also, Canadians will soon find on the shelves of their favorite grocery stores new varieties of milk and juices enriched with probiotics, a cooking oil rich in vitamin E (Red Carotino Oil) and xylitol, a new sweetener that would perfectly mimic sugar.
Very popular, prepared meals should continue their momentum with an emphasis on dishes from different countries: Moroccan tajine, pad thai, Indian curry …
Another major trend: Canadians are no longer satisfied with the supermarket near their home. They do not hesitate to go to different retail outlets to discover new products.
