In case of frequent recurrence : if you regularly have canker sores, it may be that you have certain nutritional deficiencies (iron, folic acid, vitamins B1, B2, B6, B12). Your doctor can prescribe a preventive treatment based on food supplements.
You have “giant” canker sores : these canker sores sometimes measure up to one centimeter in diameter. They often sit in the pharynx, on the soft palate, where they cause significant inflammation with swelling and intense pain. Often it is impossible to speak.
These giant canker sores last longer than small canker sores, sometimes several months. They require appropriate medical treatment (corticosteroids). Without treatment, they heal poorly and cause retraction of surrounding tissues.
Good to know:
Don’t confuse canker sores with herpes : herpes is manifested by a greater number of small ulcerations, grouped by 5 or 10 on the front of the mouth, sometimes overflowing on the edge of the lips. Herpes is very rare before the age of 20.
Frequent canker sores associated with joint pain and cardiovascular, neurological and digestive disorders may be signs of Behçet’s disease. Do not hesitate to consult in case of appearance of these associated symptoms.
