So how do you succeed in your professional retraining?
In France, one out of two assets is considering, carrying out or has already carried out his professional retraining! This was revealed in June 2020 by the big survey produced by BVA on the French and reconversion.
But why do we want to convert? Three motivations stand out in particular:
- First, boredom and lack of meaning at workcited by 44% of respondents;
- Next, pressure in the current job (36% of respondents);
- Finally, health issues such as a burnout for example (23% of respondents, including a large proportion of those under 35.
To find out how to succeed in your retraining, there’s nothing like a practical Guide… That’s good, I prepared one which I gladly offer to you !
1. Why change?
That’s true, where does this sudden urge come from? What are the real reasons that lead you to want to change your professional orientation? Identify the triggers which lead you to this desire for retraining: stress, burn-out, weariness, desire for independence, pressure from the hierarchy, bad working atmosphere, deep boredom, stagnating salary…
It is important to take the time to take stock to understand what no longer suits you in the current situation. Is you still like your job Or do you especially want a change?
Ask yourself the right questions and answer them as clearly as possible: in my current job, what do I dislike doing? What interests me the least? I advise you to put words to your discomfort at work. By identifying the root causes of your distress, you will lay the first solid foundations for your career change.
2. Where do I set foot?
Now it’s time to be constructive…Ask yourself what you’re looking for, what you’re missing, what you want to accomplish, what you really want in your career. There are plenty of possible answers: more responsibilities? More sense? Less pressure? Cooler management? A better salary? More free time? More autonomy? More telecommuting?
Also take the opportunity to think about your ideal job, the one that would allow you to fully develop and take advantage of all your skills. By racking your brains to get to the bottom of things, you will list the things that are essential for you in your future profession (or your future position). Or maybe you already have your little idea, like going back to school or create your business to live from your passion…
3. Time to take stock?
Whether you are hesitating about the choice of your reorientation or whether you know exactly where you want to go, make a skills assessment with a specialist consultant is always a good idea. It will allow you to better identify your strengths, your skills and, more generally, your interpersonal skills.
With an exterior look that is both professional and benevolent, you will be able to project into the future and draw out interesting career paths that you hadn’t necessarily thought of.
This assessment will give you the opportunity to go deeper into your thinking and take stock of what interests and motivates you. It usually lasts about twenty hourss (half of which devoted to individual interviews), spread over two or three months.
Many organizations offer professional assessments. The financing will depend on your situation (employee, job seeker, etc.) but, most often, your credit CPF can be mobilized for this process.
4. Do I like it?
Seek information about different trades in the sector that interests you and the companies that are recruiting. The sources of information are numerous, varied and accessible online. You can carry out a 360° survey : trades, specialties, training, openings, job market.
You can also conduct business surveys with professionals and try to talk to someone who already practices this profession. This will allow you to compare your vision to reality. If you take the time to look, you can also take advantage of certain Pôle Emploi schemes that allow you to discover jobs.
If you are young, you can also come across discovery courses organized by the local missions. If you are less young, know thatthere is no age limit for doing an internship. The immersion internship is a concrete opportunity to find out if a job corresponds to what you have in mind. Nothing is more effective than moments in actual conditions. If you are currently employed, it may be a good time to take leave or request unpaid leave.
