Introducing your baby to your dog requires a positive approach, with patience and understanding.
Introducing a new baby into the family is always an emotional and crucial moment. This step must be managed with particular care when you own a dog. Getting your dog to accept this new member does not happen overnight and requires preparation, patience and understanding.
The first meeting
The first meeting between your dog and your newborn must be handled delicately. Even if you know your dog well, keep in mind that he is still an animal whose reactions can be unpredictable.
The smells and sounds made by the baby, as well as his reactions, can be surprising to your dog. Therefore, it is crucial to always be present when your baby and dog are in the same room in order to supervise their interactions.
To introduce
Gradually encourage positive interactions by using positive reinforcements for the dog when he behaves calmly and curiously (petting, rewards). You can allow your dog to sniff your baby, but keep a safe distance.
Don’t hesitate to talk to your baby, explaining who the animal is, saying its name, and reassuring it that it is there. Throughout the interactions, stay calm; your dog should not become a source of stress for you.
Stay attentive at every moment
Even the sweetest dogs can have unpredictable reactions, which is why it is important to always monitor and guide interactions with your baby. Pay attention to your dog’s communication signals, including a growl, which should be taken seriously.
By encouraging calm and controlled encounters, you help your dog gradually get used to your baby’s presence, while creating positive experiences that promote your child’s development. This will help develop a friendly and respectful relationship between them for years to come.
