We know the scalp better
The cause of dandruff is a yeast called “Malassezia”, which lives naturally on the skull. It develops to the detriment of the local flora, breaking the balance of the microbiome (all micro-organisms). Scales, more or less thick, then appear. “So far, we have very extensively studied only one of the actors of the microbiome: the Malassezia yeast proliferating on the scalp presenting with dandruff. But she does not act alone, says Luc Aguilar, director of biological and clinical research for advanced research at L’Oréal. HASToday we know that there are ten times more bacteria on the scalp, some of which are involved in the proliferation of Malassezia. In dandruff states, an overall imbalance of the microbiome is observed. »
We treat without “stripping”
“We know better the role of the local saprophytic flora, which it is important to preserve. This is why we seek more to rebalance and less to “stripping” in order to eliminate the responsible fungus”, specifies Dr. Philippe Deshayes, dermatologist. “To develop more effective treatments over the long term, the new approach is instead to target the microbiome as a whole”, emphasizes Luc Aguilar.
We use gentler treatments
The treatment must act on the yeast by rebalancing the local flora. Current treatment shampoos are more respectful, which requires a gentle cleansing base and an active ingredient that limits the proliferation of Malassezia (piroctone olamine, zinc pyrithione, selenium disulphide). Plus a soothing active, like bisabolol, and an ingredient like salicylic acid, which eliminates scales.
We beautify the hair fiber
Care agents are added to beautify the hair: vegetable oils, glycerin, ceramides… In order for it to treat the problem and restore shine, it must be left on for three to five minutes.
The treatment lasts between three and six weeks, with two or three applications per week. And to avoid recurrences, continue to shampoo every week or fortnight.
We consult if necessary
If after a month of treatment, dandruff persists or the condition of the scalp has worsened, it is better to see a dermatologist. Because if dandruff is not a disease, but a simple imbalance of the scalp, their treatment can be complex. In this case, the doctor can prescribe more powerful anti-inflammatories such as local corticosteroids.
