To reduce hospital bills, France is launching into hospital hotels. Patients who do not require special care will be welcomed there.
The hospital must save money. So as part of the ambulatory shift, around forty health establishments will offer their patients non-medical accommodation. Nicknamed “hospital hotels”, these services will prevent hospitalization of patients who do not need special medical care. These establishments are listed in a stopped published this Wednesday, July 19 in the Official Journal.
Launched by the previous government, this experiment should last 3 years. Among the 41 voluntary establishments are anti-cancer centers such as the Léon Bérard Center in Lyon, the center specializing in rehabilitation in Kerpape (Brittany) or large Parisian hospitals such as the Necker-Enfants Malades or Robert Debré hospitals.
These establishments will be able to accommodate patients in their own premises, but separate from those dedicated to hospitalizations. Accommodation can also be provided by a hotelier or a partner association. This service will be offered to patients before or after their care.
1,200 euros savings per night
Proposed by Olivier Véran, rapporteur for the 2015 social security budget, this measure should reduce costs from 1,250 to 50 euros per day for the State. A project recommended by the Haute Autorité de Santé (HAS) which could generate significant savings.
However, it is not unanimous. In an editorial published 3 years ago, the French Association for Ambulatory Surgery (AFCA) expressed its opposition. Its president, Prof. Corinne Vons, explained, for example, that these services could become new “nosocomial infection transmission sites”. She also feared that these structures would become “discount” hospitals.
The evaluation carried out over the next two years will tell whether these reservations were justified and will allow us to assess the interest of these hospital hotels.
