“What car do you drive these days?”
Anyone who already watched F1 a little more than ten years ago – or already does not listen to Olav Mol but puts the F1TV app in English – knows the name Karun Chandhok. The Indian former F1 driver is one of the Sky Sports-commentators you could hear earlier today during the 1st free practice in Abu Dhabi. What not everyone knows is that he also works at Driven International as an advisor. This company led the project to turn Yas Marina Circuit into what it is today. Turns 5, 6 and 7, for example, became one corner, and so some major changes were made. The circuit in Abu Dhabi became a circuit with more straights.
Straights are the specialty of Mercedes. Christian Horner, team principal at Red Bull, apparently thinks the circuit has changed in favor of Mercedes. During training, he speaks with Chandhok. He jokingly implies that Mercedes bribed the track designers with a free car: ‘I wonder what kind of car you drive these days after these nice changes you’ve made. Apparently you’ve taken out all the corners Mercedes didn’t like.’

Obviously a joke, but Karun feels the need to clarify things: ‘This [de verandering aan de baan] it all started before the season started, before we knew what each car would be like.” The two have a good laugh about it. Horner added: “I think you’ve done a good job on the track, it’s a lot smoother now.” By the way, can we conclude from the above photo that Max has identical twins?
