During their lifetime, 40% of the French population should have a cold sore at least once. 15% of them will even suffer from recurrent viral cold sores, with three to four outbreaks on average per year. And these can be the cause, for 8 affected people out of 10, of psychological disorders and of a stigmatization related to received ideas on the pathology. To fight against these false beliefs, the pharmaceutical company Vectans Pharma is launching in November a website, nicknamed “Less cold sores”.
Identify, treat, prevent and fight
Cold sore is not contagious? False. Can antibiotics treat it? False. From the tingling, the application of vinegar, a clove of garlic or an ice cube prevents a cold sore from coming out? False. The site answers all the questions one can ask about this viral disease, without serious medical consequences for healthy people. It should also be remembered that 9 out of 10 adults are HIV-positive Herpes simplex, the virus most frequently responsible for the pathology. This explains why the latter is actually more common than one might think.
In four sections – identify, treat, prevent and fight – the site provides a list of actions to avoid and things to do to prevent recurrence. For example, he reminds you to always wash your hands after touching the lesion, not to disinfect it with alcohol or to avoid kissing those around you. Detailed information on treatments is also available. So you will no longer be able to say “Cold sores ruin my life”, like the woman at the head of the gondola on the site.
