A new study led by biologists gives a more precise idea of the profile of French people with Chronic Kidney Disease (CRD).
- Chronic Kidney Disease (CRD) is a silent and very common pathology.
- More than 6 million French people are concerned, figures that have been constantly increasing in recent years.
On the occasion of kidney disease prevention week, on March 11, biologists from the Biogroup network offered free national screening in 900 laboratories, which made it possible to measure the blood creatinine levels of nearly 25,000 people spread throughout France.
“A strict methodology was respected with the collection of the patient’s consent and a questionnaire allowing the results to be interpreted according to essential clinical data such as age, weight or the notion of diabetes or hypertension”says Dr. Isabelle Rivière, medical biologist at Biogroup.
Glomerular filtration rate (GFR)
The blood creatinine level is used to calculate the glomerular filtration rate (GFR), and thus to assess the efficiency of kidney function. It is this GFR which makes it possible to detect kidney damage when it is less than 60ml.
In total, 1,043 French people (4.2% of the total) who were unaware of the disease were alerted thanks to the screening campaign. 73% of patients with a low GFR (30 to 60 ml) and 33% of patients with an abnormally low GFR (less than 30 ml) were unaware of the disease.
“A lack of screening and information”
“Diabetic and hypertensive patients begin to deteriorate their renal function at an early age (30-40 years), which reinforces the need for early detection. can we also read the report. Lhe regions with the highest rate of French people suffering from kidney damage are the Grand-Est (9.3% of patients analysed), Hauts-de-France (9.1%), and Corsica (9.0%).
“This study has thus made it possible to highlight a lack of screening and information in people with a lowered GFR, as well as a certainly insufficient follow-up of diabetics and hypertensives”conclude the authors.
