In 2019, nearly 4 million people in France were identified as “diabetics” by Health Insurance. In more than 9 out of 10 cases, it was a question of type 2 diabetes, a pathology more frequent after the age of 40.
If diabetics often have to resort to drug treatment, diabetes (and especially type 2 diabetes) also requires adopting a healthy lifestyle, with regular physical activity and a balanced diet.
Precisely: a new study, carried out jointly by Canadian and Australian researchers, is interested in the question of the “ideal breakfast” for people suffering from type 2 diabetes (T2D).
A less sweet breakfast, but higher in protein and fat
The scientists recruited 121 volunteers with T2DM. These were divided into two groups: for 12 weeks, participants in group 1 were asked to eat a breakfast every morning low in carbohydrates but high in protein and “good” fats. Group 2 participants, on the other hand, were entitled to a low-calorie but not particularly low-carb breakfast. The two options offered totaled about 450 Kcal.
Result ? At the end of the experiment, participants in group 1 had significantly lower blood sugar (glycaemia) levels than participants in group 2. Thanks to this dietary change, some volunteers in group 1 even managed to reduce their drug treatment.
“For people who have difficulty sticking to a low-sugar diet, a simple breakfast change can be a good start.“note the scientists.
In case of type 2 diabetes, the “ideal breakfast” therefore consists of 25 g of protein + 8 g of carbohydrates + 37 g of good fats. An example to understand: two slices of white ham (or smoked salmon) + a small bowl of fromage blanc (or skyr) + a handful of almonds (or an avocado). A good habit to get into!
