September 14, 2010 – People with heart failure should consume the equivalent of 1 g per day of marine omega-3, recommends a British expert.
According to the Dr Martin Cowie, who did a review of recent clinical studies1, data indicates that omega-3s may help prevent hospitalizations and death in patients with heart failure.
He notably cites the results of a clinical trial2 conducted over 4 years with 7,000 patients suffering from heart failure. The results show that treatment with marine omega-3s reduced the risk of hospitalization or death from heart rhythm disturbances by 8%. Note that the most common complication of heart failure is atrial or ventricular fibrillation. It affects 20% to 50% of patients and can be fatal.
According to the Dr Cowie, it is likely that future heart failure treatment protocols will recommend that people with the disease consume marine-derived omega-3s, as is currently the case for patients who have had a heart attack.
