First reflex to have at the beginning of the year: take stock and identify, with your child, the reasons which motivated the decision of the class council (if you did not discuss it at length during the holidays!). Basically, what is the cause of the blockage? Did your child feel lost, unmotivated? Has he had a health problem, a cognitive impairment? Has he suffered a shock or during the past year (a family drama for example) which may have delayed him in his learning? It is by discussing the situation and any discomfort with him that you will help him pinpoint what is wrong: lack of work, problems of organization, method, concentration … He will really feel caught up in it. account, as empowered in the analysis of its own course.
A good dose of confidence
To catch his breath and get off on the right foot, your child must understand that repeating a year is not a punishment but on the contrary a second chance given to him to acquire a good foundation, to mature, to fill his gaps. And thus get better results. Repetition will therefore only be well experienced if it is integrated, accepted… and understood.
In this second year of “déjà vu”, when your child will not find his friends but perhaps his instit ‘from last year or some of his teachers, he will need you to accompany him without assisting him, that you support him where he needs it most. Private lessons in its weakest subjects will be a good boost … which you can deduct from your taxes if you go through an approved organization!
And, to encourage him, nothing like setting realistic goals that are tailor-made, such as small challenges thrown at oneself (raising an average, mastering a particular type of exercise, etc.). While keeping, of course, free time for yourself, a fair balance for a successful school year!
Note: if both of you have the feeling that this repetition is an error or an injustice, know that you can only refuse it for the CP, CE2, CM1, 5ème or 1ère classes. The other levels are considered by the National Education as “end of cycle” for which the school has the right to impose repetition.
