If in 1870, only 3% of the population was over 65 years old, in 2020 more than 20% of French people will reach this age, in fact not so canonical as that if we are to believe all the photos of dashing sixties that we offer magazines. However, these advances, more largely due to hygiene and dietetics than to pure medicine, open up good prospects for the beauty medicine industry.
So Boston psychiatrists asked 37 people of 25 years old on average, wearing a mask on the nose, soaked or not in perfume, to guess the age of unknown people, only by examining their photos … And surprise, while the absence of scent or that of grape or cucumber does not alter the perception in any way, the simple fact of breathing pink grapefruit rejuvenates all the people photographed by 3 years on average. This is only the scientific verification of a notion that perfumers have known for a long time that grapefruit has been the basis of certain perfumes for a few years.
The perception of age involves several sensory factors. Obviously the sight: wrinkles but also progressive overweight or an attitude less and less toned and we understand that age is there. We know that hearing also plays a role because of language, old people speak differently. But no one had been interested in smell yet except to say that old age does not smell very good. To stay young, the panoply included cosmetic surgery, Botox injections against wrinkles, hair coloring, rejuvenation of language and leisure clothes.
Grapefruit
We can now play on the perfume to rejuvenate. But why grapefruit rather than lemon? Study officials believe this is due to the nostalgic effect of this fruit, a positive feeling of happiness linked to the smells of childhood. In fact, the right perfume to appear young is probably the one that will recall the pleasures of the childhood of the one you want to seduce … But then beware of unpleasant surprises!
