A new American study, published in the professional journal Interdisciplinary Toxicology suggests that glyphosate, the main active ingredient in Roundup weedkiller, is the main culprit in gluten intolerance.
Gluten intolerance or celiac disease is an increasingly common disease. It is estimated that in Europe and the United States, 5% of the population suffers from it. It causes atrophy of the villi in the small intestine and it is impossible for people with it to consume foods containing gluten without experiencing chronic abdominal pain such as cramps and diarrhea, anemia or even severe pain. form of depression.
In France, nearly 500,000 people suffer from this pathology, according to theFrench Association of Gluten Intolerant (AFDIAG). And their one and only treatment currently is a strict gluten-free diet.
Round Up tested on fish
For this study conducted by Anthony Samsel and Stéphanie Seneff, two independent American researchers, the scientists exposed fish to glyphosate. “They developed digestive problems identical to those caused by celiac disease, due to inhibition of enzymes, disruption of the synthesis of aromatic amino acids and deficiencies in iron, cobalt or copper.”
New tests are nevertheless necessary because the toxicological sheet of glyphosate mentions that it “is toxic to aquatic organisms” and that it can have, in animals, “effects mainly in the gastrointestinal tract”.
This is not the first time that the Round-Up, developed by Monsanto, has found itself at the heart of a controversy over its toxic effects. A few months ago, Professor Gilles-Eric Séralini, of the University of Caen, affirmed that the adjuvants used for the formulation of the product greatly increase the toxicity of the pesticide. Its toxicity would thus be between a hundred and a thousand times greater than what is displayed for its marketing.
