August 3, 2004 – The combined consumption of glucosamine and methylsulfomethane (MSM) would be more effective against osteoarthritis than the use of just one of these products.
According to the results of a study, published in June in the publication Clinical Drug Investigations, a significant improvement in joint mobility was observed in participants who ingested a combination of glucosamine and MSM. While each of these products is associated with relieving pain caused by osteoarthritis, it is the combination of the two that works best, according to Drs PR Usha and MUR Naidu, of Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyberabad, in. India.
In a randomized, double-blind clinical trial, 118 patients with osteoarthritis took either glucosamine, MSM, a combination of glucosamine and MSM, or placebo. After 12 weeks of treatment, participants who were given both products at the same time experienced the greatest decrease in pain index.
The researchers also noticed that the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects were felt earlier in patients taking the combination of substances than in those taking only glucosamine. The researchers conclude that the combination of MSM and glucosamine represents a rapid and active intervention against ailments linked to the deterioration of cartilage in the joints.
The effectiveness of glucosamine is well established. On the other hand, that of methylsulfomethane is not so. According to hypotheses about its therapeutic use, MSM helps eliminate toxins from the body. It is very popular with sportsmen and athletes for relieving muscle and joint injuries.
