the ketogenic diet high in fat and low in carbohydrates has already been shown to be effective in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease and the Crohn’s disease is believed to be effective in reducing the risk of blindness in people with glaucoma, a degenerative disease of the optic nerve, according to results of a study published in the medical journal the Journal of Neuroscience. These conclusions were obtained in mice.
the glaucoma, a degenerative optic nerve disease that involves progressive loss of vision, can lead to complete blindness. This disease affects 1% of the population over the age of 40. It is the second leading cause of blindness in developed countries after age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Researchers at Northeast Ohio Medical University in the United States fed mice genetically engineered to develop glaucoma with a diet that is 90% high in fat for two months. The conclusions of this experiment showed that the ketogenic diet to protect retinal cells and neural connections from degeneration by providing the cells with a greater source of energy.
If the results of this study are conclusive, researchers should conduct larger studies to confirm their results.
