Omega 3 would be of no use for heart patients. These essential fatty acids are found in particular in fish, nuts and rapeseed oil.
- Omega-3s do not reduce major adverse cardiovascular events in patients at high cardiovascular risk.
- Consuming Omega-3s when suffering from major heart problems also increases gastrointestinal disorders.
Consuming Omega-3s is beneficial for many health conditions, but not for people who suffer from serious heart problems, according to a new study published in JAMA.
Omega-3s are found in particular in fish, nuts and rapeseed oil.
The purpose of the research authors was to assess “the effect of a high dose of omega-3 fatty acids compared to corn oil on major adverse cardiovascular events in patients at high cardiovascular risk”, in addition to the usual disease-modifying therapies such as statins.
“No significant difference”
13,078 patients were included in a randomized clinical trial. 675 hospitals from North America, Europe, South America, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa participated in the study. Assessment: “daily omega-3 fatty acid supplementation, compared to corn oil, resulted in no significant difference in the composite outcome of major adverse cardiovascular events,” write the scientists.
We are talking here about cardiovascular death, non-fatal myocardial infarction, non-fatal stroke, coronary revascularization or unstable angina requiring hospitalization. They therefore conclude that “These results do not support the use of this formulation of omega-3 fatty acids to reduce major adverse cardiovascular events in patients at high cardiovascular risk.”
Gastrointestinal disorders
Consuming Omega-3s when suffering from major heart problems also increases gastrointestinal disorders. “A higher rate of gastrointestinal adverse effects was observed in the omega-3 group (24.7%) compared to patients treated with corn oil (14.7%)”, can we read in the JAMA.
