Most fruit juices are sweeter than soda, according to the results of a major survey by Action on Sugar, an association of British researchers working on the effects of sugar on health.
Scientists analyzed the composition and measured the sugar level of 203 fruit juices, juice drinks and smoothies intended for children and sold as healthy. The results of their investigation are edifying.
Too much sugar in industrial fruit juices
A quarter of the drinks tested (57) contained as much or more sugar than Cola, i.e. 10.6 g of sugar per 100 ml (5 teaspoons in 200ml) and some even contained up to 8 teaspoons of sugar, that’s one and a half times more than soda!
“It is a scandal that these drinks are being sold as safe for children and parents. It must stop. We must put an end to the spiraling completely out of control of the childhood obesity epidemic in England ”, indignant Pr Graham MacGregor, of the Queen Mary Unisversity of London, and president of Action on Sugar.
Especially since the World Health Organization (WHO) recently called for reducing our intake of sugars, so that they only constitute 5% of our daily caloric intake (against 10% previously), to fight against obesity and cavities. It is therefore recommended not to exceed the daily dose of 6 sugar cubes for adults and 3 for children.
And as the organization points out, a large part of the sugars consumed today are “hidden” in processed foods that are not always considered sweets. For example, 1 tablespoon of ketchup contains about 1 lump of sugar.
The only solution to avoid overdosing on sugar is to squeeze your Juice and prepare their homemade smoothies.
