Frequent travelers are our new heroes: this is the conclusion of a Swedish study, recently published by a team of researchers from Surrey and Lund University (Sweden). By studying social networks and media representations, scientists have discovered that, in our Western societies, people who travel a lot are perceived as more interesting, richer and superior to others…
Except that according to the researchers, living permanently between the train and the plane could have serious consequences on our health: “There are many disadvantages to being hypermobile, and we think it is important to warn the public,” explains Dr. Scott Cohen, lead author of the study, published in the scientific journal Environment and Planning.
First, the jet lag. The disruption of our biological clock (which occurs when traveling far east or west) leads to fatigue, of course, but also insomnia, hypersensitivity and digestive disorders (diarrhea, constipation, heartburn stomach…). Then, when you travel a lot, the risk of vein thrombosis is much higher: spending long hours in a seated position can disrupt blood circulation and lead to the formation of a clot, especially when the trip lasts more than 5 hours.
“Furthermore, we noticed that frequent travelers generally have very high levels of stress,” the researchers add. Loneliness and estrangement from family and friends can lead to depressive episodes. World travel enthusiasts, you have been warned: don’t neglect your health!
