A surgeon from Toulouse University Hospital has achieved a medical feat: he operated on a 13-month-old baby, condemned from birth by multiple heart defects. Alex has returned home, now out of danger.
A risky, unprecedented but successful operation
This is a medical feat. A Toulouse surgeon has an operation on a baby condemned by a rare heart disease. Dr Fabio Cuttone who operated on the child testifies: “ It was an unprecedented and very risky operation. But we have privileged the long-term patient benefit and give the child a heart without abnormality. », He declared, at the microphone of France Bleu Occitanie.
Without this operation, this baby was doomed to die in the next few months. Alex, 13 months old, is now out of danger. He withstood the two surgical operations well and, after only two weeks of hospitalization, he returned home with a totally healthy heart.
Many heart defects condemned him
To better understand what the baby was suffering from, it should be noted that at his birth, in August 2017, Alex’s heart had many malformations that condemned him to certain death. A very rare case since the little boy is the third case recorded.
And to save him, the doctor performed two operations : the first when Alex was only three days old, on the left pulmonary artery, the second, in April 2018,
for conotroncal rotation. This is a reconstruction that very few hospitals in France perform: a gesture that helps restore a normal heart to the patient. This is the case for Alex.
