Food waste, can do better. France is relaunching its national pact to fight against food wasteand commits to halving food losses by 2025.
Why a national plan? Some figures show the extent of the current mismanagement: each French person throws in the trash the equivalent of one dish of pasta per day, which represents 26 kg of food waste per year and per person.
This mess also has an ecological cost: the carbon impact of this waste is estimated at 15.3 million tonnes of CO2, or 5 times the emissions linked to domestic air traffic, pointed out theEnvironment and Energy Management Agency (Ademe) in a study from last May.
To raise awareness of the problem of food waste, the Ministry of Agriculture is launching a campaign “Throwing away less is eating better” which uses the tales of Snow White or Cinderella to inform young and old of the good anti-waste gestures to adopt. This operation is relayed on social networks with in particular the hashtag #AntiGaspi and the “anti-waste” site of the Ministry of Agriculture.
Good “anti-waste” reflexes
Because food waste is everyone’s business, a few good “anti-waste” habits can save you big money, for example:
-not have eyes bigger than your stomach and buy in reasonable quantities and intelligently. Planning the menus for the week to have visibility and avoid throwing away can be a trick.
-do not choose fruits and vegetables according to their appearance: the “ugly” are also tasty and edible.
– better preserve your food. Freezing leftovers or putting them in an airtight box in the refrigerator is a reflex that is still too often lost.
-learn how to cook leftovers by trying out anti-waste recipes that recycle leftovers. The “anti-waste” site offers a wide range of them. Top Santé is also full of many “anti-waste” advice.
