Android users should be vigilant in the coming weeks. A new variant of FluBot wants you to install a rogue version of Adobe Flash Player.
When you install the malware (unintentionally), the software gains access to your contact list. Then those contacts are asked via text message if they want to watch a video, including a link to a website. The visitor is asked whether he wants to download an app, the rogue Flash Player, so that they can view the video. After installing FluBot performs the same actions, bringing even more people into contact with the virus.
Fortunately, you can prevent this as a recipient. Text the person back with the question what this is about, to check whether the link was sent deliberately. Have you already clicked on the link? No problem: only when you give permission for the installation, the malware will install itself. Incidentally, that installation takes place outside the Play Store; that’s another indication that something isn’t kosher. Furthermore, Adobe pulled the plug on the Flash Player. Not everyone knows that; but if you do know this, then you immediately know that this is a strange situation.
Installed yet?
Do you have the malware installed unexpectedly, then there is only one thing to do: completely reset your device. Bring it back to factory settings and erase all data. Only then can you be sure that the malware has been removed. Simply removing the rogue Flash Player is not enough.
