Menstrual cycles for 40 years increase life expectancy
“Our study found that women who have menstrual cycles for more than 40 years increase their chances of living to age 90”said Dr Aladdin Shadyab, lead author of the study with the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health at the University of San Diego.
Of the approximately 16,000 participants included in the study, 55% survived beyond 90 years. These women who had their period or menopause later than average were generally healthier and had less coronary heart disease than average as well.
“This study is only the beginning of our research on longevity” Dr Shadyab adds, saying more studies are needed to examine how lifestyle, genetics and environmental factors may explain the link between lifespan and reproductive cycle longevity.
