The vascular surgery team at the Edouard Herriot hospital in Lyon operated on an outpatient basis on a patient with an abdominal aortic aneurysm.
This is a first in France. Surgeons from the Edouard Herriot hospital (Lyon) treated a person with an aortic aneurysm on an outpatient basis on March 30, the Hospices Civils de Lyon announced at the end of April. Operated in the morning, the patient was able to return to his home in the evening while remaining under medical supervision. A month after the operation, he is doing well.
An aneurysm is a localized dilation of the artery. Silently, this dilation weakens the wall of the blood vessel. If the aneurysm is not detected in time, the wall of the artery can rupture causing internal bleeding: this is the rupture of the aneurysm. It can affect different organs. But the most dreaded is the aortic aneurysm. Affecting the most important and the largest of the arteries of the body, it kills in the vast majority of cases.
Two types of surgeries
The challenge is therefore to detect it early in order to treat the diseased vessel. When the malformation reaches 5 centimeters, surgical intervention is necessary. Doctors may opt for conventional surgery in which the patient’s abdomen has to be opened to replace the diseased portion of the artery with a prosthesis. The patient must then be hospitalized for several days.
Another option: endovascular treatment which consists of placing the prosthesis through the femoral arteries. This cutting-edge surgery is aimed at the most at-risk patients, who cannot stand open surgery. Again, the operated patient must stay a few nights in the hospital.
