Almost 30%. This is the number of French people who have been trained in first aid gestures, according to the Academy of Medicine. But few people can help people with mental disorders. This was revealed by the Mental Health First Aid Association, in a press release published on February 4. According to his data, in France, more than 16,000 first aiders, or about 0.02%, are able to react to psychological disorders.
Faced with this observation, the organization has launched first aid training in mental health. The aim of the association is to improve knowledge on mental health issues, reduce stigma and increase the application of first aid methods to people with mental disorders.
How is Mental Health First Aid training conducted?
The training lasts 14 hours and takes place over 2 days or 4 half-days. It is intended for students and adults who work or live with adolescents and young people (parents, social workers, teachers, etc.). During the training, theoretical contributions are coupled with practical application.
“Its objective is to allow a more appropriate identification of mental health disorders as well as support towards care. It addresses the most frequent mental disorders, in crisis and non-crisis situations, provides reading keys and practical tools to answer”, indicates the organization. Eating disorders and self-harm without suicidal intentions are also addressed during the training.
