About the breakfast too, the studies follow each other but are not alike… This time, it is the University of Alabama in Birmingham (United States) which is closely interested in the first meal of the daytime. The researchers tried to answer the following question: is it that, if we skip breakfast, we risk gaining more weight? And their answer is no.
This study (published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition) obviously goes against the current of recent work on the issue: indeed, there are countless articles and scientific publications that recall the importance of breakfast, in particular for the proper functioning of the cardiovascular systemto combat the diabetes and infertilitybut also to prevent obesity and overweight.
Despite everything, the researchers from the University of Alabama are critical of the results of previous studies: according to them, the experimental protocols were not respected, and the test samples were not provided enough… They therefore decided to start over.
Everything and its opposite
To study the impact of breakfast on weight gain, they therefore brought together 309 healthy, overweight or even obese individuals and observed them for 16 consecutive weeks. The sample was divided into several groups: from one week to the next, some took a breakfast out of bed and others, not.
Results ? At the end of 16 weeks, the weight losses of each other had not been influenced by whether or not they had breakfast in the morning… “We must now confirm these results, comments Emilie Dhurandhar, professor at the University of Alabama Department of Health and author of the study. Indeed, breakfast has no influence on weight gain, but still has an impact on appetite and metabolism. »
A study that leaves you perplexed: by reading everything and its opposite on breakfast, what should we believe?
