Whole grains, olive oil, fruits and vegetables: these are the main lines of the Mediterranean diet, also called the Cretan diet. For many years, this diet has been acclaimed for its health benefits: it would help fight against cardiovascular disorders, improve mental health or even intestinal transit. Recently, a study published in the journal Nutrients, highlighted another benefit to this diet. According to the conclusions of the research team, it would also improve the quality of sperm.
Mediterranean diet and Western diet: what effects on fertility?

To achieve this, the scientist and her team analyzed various studies carried out on the Mediterranean diet and on the effects of an anti-inflammatory diet. “We have highlighted that, despite some inconsistencies in the scientific literature, adherence to an anti-inflammatory diet is generally associated with improved female performance (menstrual cycle, endometriosis-related measures, embryo quality and birth health) and male fertility outcomes (sperm quality)”, conclude the authors. The various scientific studies notably compared this diet with the Western diet, defined by a high consumption of saturated fats, refined carbohydrates and animal proteins, and associated with higher levels of inflammation.
Mediterranean diet: why is it called anti-inflammatory?
“NOTWe have found consistent evidence that by adhering to an anti-inflammatory diet, which includes lots of polyunsaturated or “healthy” fats, flavonoids (like leafy green vegetables), and a limited amount of red and processed meat, we can improve fertility”, conclude the authors. Thus, it is the properties of the foods characteristic of the Mediterranean diet that give it its anti-inflammatory abilities. It is mainly based on the consumption of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, extra virgin olive oil, legumes, dried fruits, herbs and spices. Regarding proteins, consumption is focused on lean meats, fish, eggs and certain dairy products such as yogurts. “Red and processed meats are only eaten in small amounts”note the authors.
Mediterranean diet: help to boost fertility
For the authors, this diet will not make it possible to do without medically assisted procreation when it is necessary, on the other hand, it can facilitate conception. “Knowing that it can increase your chances of conceiving and having a baby is extremely promising.”, says Simon Alesi, co-author of the study.
