In France, at least 500,000 women are said to be addicted to alcohol. In order to make the population aware of the warning signs, the Addictions Actions Fund has launched an online game available on the website of “Addictaide.fr”. The game, entitled “Laurence’s secret” was created in the style of an “escape game”. The goal was to move around an apartment and find clues in order to uncover the owner’s secret. Stain on the carpet, broken mirror, expired food … Out of the 7,000 players, only 3 managed to discover Laurence’s secret: alcoholism. The site has indeed just revealed the solution to the enigma and is launching an awareness-raising and information campaign on women suffering from this disease.
A game inspired by a true story
The apartment that you can visit does not come out of nowhere since it is a replica of that of Laurence Cottet, a former alcoholic. The aim of this approach is to show that it is even more difficult to detect this disease in women and that it can go unnoticed for many years.
The physical signs are mainly rosacea (reddening of the face), unhealthy hair, bad breath … Nothing impossible to hide. That’s why in Laurence’s apartment, you could find lots of face creams, or coffee beans in her bag that she used to chew to cover the scent. This game shows that it is easy to miss the addiction of a loved one. Today the visit of the apartment is completed by videos of medical specialists and interviews with Laurence Cottet who explains her story and the subterfuges she had put in place.
