Fatiha experiments with futuristic augmented reality glasses. Visually impaired for 46 years, she had never seen her children. .
It’s a new life that begins for Fatiha, a forty-something almost blind since birth. Suffering from retinal degeneration, this 47-year-old woman can now see the faces of her children, “ with their looks when they smile, ”she told RTL on Tuesday. A miracle ? No, rather a technological feat. Because Fatiha was able to regain her sight thanks to a prototype of futuristic glasses.
Microscope glasses
This technology is a source of hope for many visually impaired people. Like a microscope, these glasses are equipped with a small camera that projects the image onto the retina. In addition, the system is equipped with a remote control that allows you to zoom live, or even more precisely by taking a screenshot.
“Now, when I see a sign or poster, I can zoom in and read what is written. It’s completely new. And I believe that it also completely changes daily life, in the relationship with others. My colleagues are more outgoing, more attentive, ”confirms Fatiha. Now, this mom regularly travels to Paris to carry out the tests and adjustments necessary to benefit from these glasses at work and at home. Because the model remains to be refined.
Fathia, the first to experiment with the prototype
Initially, it is thanks to an agreement between the French ophthalmological equipment manufacturer Essilor and ERDF and GRDF, where Fatiha is employed, that this initiative was able to see the light of day, reported yesterday the Republican East. Fatiha is also the first to have experienced these glasses. She has since been joined by three other people across France. The designers want to optimize the little vision still enjoyed by people with very low vision.
A dream that can only come true when the product is fully finalized. Today, many points still need to be improved. These glasses have, in fact, an autonomy of barely an hour, the field of vision is particularly limited, and they quickly tire the wearer.
