Between 280,000 and 500,000 deaths could be avoided over a 10-year period, simply by reducing Americans’ salt intake to less than 1.5g per day, from the 3.6g consumed today. In France, the salt intake would be around 10 g/d for men and 8 g/d for women, according to the National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety (Anses). The World Health Organization recommends a maximum intake of 5 g of salt per day.
The harmful effect of salt on health occurs in particular through an increase in arterial pressure caused by excessive consumption. The more salt you eat, the higher your blood pressure.
We do not always realize our excessive composition of salt insofar as we do not necessarily have a heavy hand on the salt shaker. On the other hand, cheeses, charcuterie, ready meals and even the bread we eat are already loaded with salt. This is why it is necessary to limit these foods (without banishing them because they have other benefits) and prefer the dishes that you have simmered with love rather than buying frozen foods of which you do not control all the composition.
