It is not age that causes the spots that appear on the skin of older people, but the sun. These spots are caused by an increase in melanin, a natural pigment in the skin that can turn dark after exposure to ultraviolet rays.
Some people have found a good way to get rid of them: rub them with lemon juice. The explanation is simple: lemon juice contains alpha-hydroxy acids (the famous AHAs). AHAs have the property of accelerating the replacement of dead body cells. With a little time, any superficial pigmentation disappears.
When going to bed, just soak a cotton ball with lemon juice and moisten the skin areas to be treated. You may feel a little tingling from the citric acid but this effect disappears in a few minutes. If there is no sign of irritation after two or three weeks, the treatment is done twice a day. Some people see their spots disappear in eight weeks, while others can wait up to a year. As a bonus, AHAs also erase wrinkles, but lemon juice has never been studied for that.
Be careful not to confuse skin spots with basal cell epithelioma, the most common form of skin cancer. Epitheliomas most often look like an irregular-looking mole that grows slowly. However, they can be easily removed by surgery and rarely metastasize.
