The Carrefour group has decided to introduce special leave for its employees who suffer from endometriosis as well as those who have had a miscarriage or are following a PMA course.
- Carrefour will set up special leave from the summer of 2023 for its employees who suffer from endometriosis. They will be able to benefit from 12 days per year, up to one day per month.
- To have access to this system, employees must produce a document attesting to their disability recognized by the company (recognition of the status of disabled worker (RQTH), an inclusion card, a certificate of disability issued by Primary Health Insurance Fund).
- Women will also be able to have 3 days of authorized medical absence following a miscarriage and 1 day of absence for those having recourse to PMA (at the time of an embryo transfer), in addition to the devices laws in force.
Endometriosis, a disease that affects one in 10 women, causes severe pain, especially during menstruation. They can have a significant impact on daily life. The Carrefour group has decided to come to the aid of its employees affected by this pathology by granting them special leave of 12 days per year.
Carrefour: endometriosis leave to offer more equality at work
The new system will be implemented from the summer of 2023. Carrefour is the “first major company to do so”, according to its CEO Alexandre Bompard. To benefit from the 12 days of absence – up to one per month – employees must present a document attesting to the situation of disability recognized by the company: recognition of the status of disabled worker (RQTH)an inclusion card or a disability certificate issued by the Primary Health Insurance Fund.
During a press conference, Alexandre Bompard indicated that the measure had been taken to “advancing women’s rights and equality at work”. He believes it will benefit “50,000 women who work every day in Carrefour stores in France” and who will thus be able “to thrive in work without fear of being ostracized by their health”.
Asked by The Parisianthe boss added that a campaign will be launched “because managers don’t always know what women can endure”. The company will share a guide as well as audio-video content around the behaviors to be avoided. “The orientation of the women concerned towards the anonymous and free psychological support platform accessible to all Carrefour France employees will also be reinforced”specified the company press release.
Miscarriage and PMA: special leave also planned
The retail company has also taken into account other difficulties encountered by women. In addition to endometriosis leave, she plans to offer “three days of authorized medical absence following a miscarriage” – a measure currently being debated in Parliament -, and a day of authorized absence for women having recourse to PMA “in addition to the legal provisions in force”. This leave can be taken “at the time of embryo transfer”.
On the other hand, the company does not intend to introduce menstrual leave, offered in some French companies and institutions such as the Town Hall of Saint-Ouen.
These devices are, for the moment, planned only in the French branch of the group. However, they should be gradually extended to other countries where the brand is present, such as Italy and Spain.
