Schoolchildren aged 6 to 8 inhaled and possibly drank e-cigarette refill liquid. Two girls were hospitalized.
Thirteen schoolchildren aged 6 to 8 were poisoned after inhaling and possibly ingesting an electronic cigarette refill product in a primary school in Cavaillon, in the Vaucluse.
According to the region’s firefighters, the children would have played with the liquid during recess at 10:30 a.m. boy.
On the spot, the firefighters did not consider it necessary to take all the children to the hospital. Only two girls, who complained of headaches, were transported to the Center Hospitalier d’Avignon. Their headaches are linked to the nicotine present in the liquids.
Potentially dramatic consequences
Classified as “very dangerous” by the World Health Organization, this substance can lead to serious adverse effects in the event of dermal or oral exposure. Nicotine poisoning causes nausea, vomiting, rapid heart rate and difficulty breathing. For children, the consequences can be dramatic.
In order to avoid the risks associated with misuse as much as possible, European regulations impose a maximum quantity of nicotine of 20 mg/mL. However, even at these concentrations, zero risk does not exist. It is therefore advisable to keep the bottles of e-liquid out of the reach of children.
