I’osteoporosis is a common condition in women, especially after menopause. It results in a decrease in bone mineralization and is manifested by an increased risk of fractures. It is the main cause, with the increased risk of falling, of fractures in the elderly.
According to some received ideas, coffee is good for the bones, but this view is far from unanimous. A recent meta-analysis, published in the journal Osteoporosis International and reported by the international journal of medicine in December 2022 on this subject covers 17 studies involving 7,114 participants.
Better bet on calcium and vitamin D
The results of this work reveal that a high consumption of coffee, compared to a low consumption, is associated with a significantly lower risk of osteoporosis. The same is true for the risk of fractures. An association between the level of coffee consumption and the incidence of hip fractures has also been demonstrated.
However, it is not wise to start drinking more coffee in order to protect yourself from osteoporosis, because these studies remain fragile in their conclusion. Regular physical exercise, taking calcium and vitamin D to strengthen the bones are better analyzed protective factors.
