It is still unclear how long the vaccines protect and to what extent
The number of corona infections has increased rapidly in recent weeks. Both unvaccinated and vaccinated people become infected with Covid-19. In many countries it has therefore already been decided to offer vaccinated persons a third shot. In the Netherlands, the Health Council will issue advice on Tuesday about using an extra shot for healthy people. The so-called booster shot. But what about people who get corona after two vaccinations. Does a corona infection count as a booster shot?
According to professor of immunology Marjolein van Egmond, the infection does indeed act as a booster, she states the website from RTL News. A third vaccination or infection after vaccination ensures that your body makes many antibodies and immune cells against covid-19 at once.
Antibodies
“Those antibodies are the first barrier between you and the pathogen. They prevent you from being infected,” says Van Egmond. Over time, the number of antibodies in your body decreases again.
Your body also creates a memory response. If your body comes into contact with virus particles, it starts working hard, Van Egmond explains on rtlnieuws.nl. “You can still get some mild symptoms, but when your immune system is up and running, you have a boost of antibodies and immune cells in your body again. Just like when you get a corona shot.”
Need a third shot?
It is still unclear whether you need a third shot after two vaccinations and an infection. “We don’t yet know how long the vaccines protect and to what extent.”
