Sodas, fruit juices, lemonades… We know that sugary drinks are generally bad for your health and, as such, it is best to reserve them for exceptional occasions.
A new study comes to reinforce this recommendation: carried out by American researchers (from several universities in the United States: the University of South Carolina, the Harvard Medical School, the University of Arizona …), it shows that consuming one sugary drink a day is devastating to the liver.
The American researchers studied medical data on nearly 99,000 postmenopausal women, aged 50 to 79. These had to answer questionnaires concerning their eating habits, then they were followed for about twenty years.
Sugary drinks promote liver disease (including liver cancer)
Verdict? Scientists found that women who drank one sugary drink a day (or more) had a death rate from chronic liver disease of 17.7 per 100,000 per year on average, compared to “only” 7.1 for 100,000 per year on average for volunteers who drank only 3 to 4 sugary drinks per month at most.
Regarding liver cancer, the diagnosis rate was 18 per 100,000 for addicts to sugary drinks, against 10.3 per 100,000 for women who drank less than 3 per month. Blatant numbers.
The researchers are obviously not surprised by these results:we know that the excessive consumption of sugary drinks is a risk factor for many chronic diseases, such as obesity, diabetes or even high blood pressure. It is therefore not surprising that this bad habit directly harms certain organs of the body, including the liver.” In short, it is better to go to the water…
