Brooding or always seeing the glass half empty is sometimes a reflex, even a way of looking at life. And it is often difficult to fight against what comes from a nature or a trait of his personality. But that’s not the only problem pessimists.
By dint of negativity, one can develop physical illnesses
“The stress caused by this state of mind causes an increase in voltageheart rate and easier blood clotting”, warns Dr. Lejoyeux. The resulting hypercoagulability remains a risk factor for cardiovascular illnesses and may contribute to trigger coronary problems in people suffering from constant pessimism.
But that’s not all ! A negative nature can also expose severe anxiety disorders and nervous breakdowns. “Stress and anxiety also lead to eating disorders. We tend to have more compulsions, or even to favor junk food, that is to say fatty and sweet food. This will lead to secrete two hormones: dopamine which gives energy and serotonin which soothes and calms. But in the long run, this type of diet creates other risks: diabetes, cholesterol, etc.”, adds the psychiatrist.
How to be less negative?
SO, what solutions can we consider? “There is no need to resort to drugs. This is not an effective response. Rather, it is necessary to act on the way of life. For example, let off steam through physical but playful activities, source of pleasure. They allow to secrete serotonin which will soothe the anxiety. We can also consider therapies, not to become optimistic but to modify our relationship to the world and to others. Trying to understand why we tend to see things in the dark, to be negative”, recommends the specialist.
Finally, it is advisable to develop the concept of gratitude. Admittedly, this is not a concept that is highly valued in our civilizations. However, according to several American studies in positive psychology, it actively contributes to the good emotional health of those who use it regularly. By strengthening social ties, gratitude annihilates negative emotions and provides a lasting sense of well-being. Concretely, it is to become aware of positive things and learn to appreciate them, to realize the lucky aspects of one’s life, and to be grateful for the moments of happiness that come. By reflecting on these aspects, we will not necessarily change his pessimistic nature, but we will take a step towards another vision of his existence.
