A global alert has been published by Interpol regarding 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP), an illicit and potentially fatal drug used as a diet and muscle-building aid. This alert is launched following the death of a woman in the United Kingdom and when a Frenchman fell seriously ill after consuming this substance.
Usually sold in yellow powder or capsule form, DNP was widely used in the 1930s to boost metabolism and aid weight loss. But it was pulled from sale after causing several deaths and causing cataracts in around 2.5% of its users. Since then, it has been produced in underground laboratories and bodybuilders who want to increase their muscle mass can easily find it on the internet.
According to Interpol, DNP is also used in the composition of certain creams, which are also illicit, as well as in certain explosives. Its side effects are multiple: increased temperature, insomnia, fluid retention, lethargy, nausea, reduced insulin production, shortness of breath …
“If this substance is already dangerous in itself, the risks associated with its use are amplified by its illegal production conditions” underlines Interpol which launched this alert to 190 countries in order to highlight the dangers of purchasing such products. on the Internet.
Within Interpol, an anti-doping unit works on the doping of top athletes as well as the production and black market sale of banned substances intended to improve performance.
