If you have always dreamed of having lagoon-colored eyes, welcome to the future: a Californian clinic is now offering a new cosmetic surgery operation, capable of making our eyes as blue as that of Angelina Jolie.
“Under each brown eye, there is a blue eye,” explains Dr. Gregg Homer, director of the Stroma Clinic and inventor of the technique. The only difference is that on a brown eye, there is a thin layer of melanin, therefore pigments, which covers the iris and colors it. “
The idea is therefore to use a very low power laser guided by a computer to destroy the brown pigments present on the surface. “So it’s a depigmentation,” says Dr. Gregg Homer. To date, we have already performed this operation on 37 patients, without significant side effects. In total, the operation lasts less than a minute. “
An operation that is not without risks
Except that if this operation is fast and (apparently) without risks (“the laser crosses the cornea without altering it” specifies besides Dr. Gregg Homer), according to the French Society of Ophthalmology, it could still put the vision patients at risk.
Indeed, the use of the laser can lead to infections, glaucoma for example. Then, the pigment layer which covers the iris has a use: it protects our eye from UV rays To destroy it, it is therefore to take the risk of becoming a lot more sensitive to the sun. In addition, ophthalmology professionals specify that at least 5 depigmentation sessions are required before results can be observed. And that the “azure blue” effect cannot be guaranteed 100% … In short, depigmentation of the eyes is avoided!
