Following the complaint filed in the middle of last week by the drug victims based on sodium valproate (Dépakine®, Dépakote and their derivatives) the Paris Public Prosecutor’s Office has just opened a judicial investigation for aggravated deception.
14,000 pregnant women exposed to the drug
To go into detail, the reason for this instruction is “deception on the risks inherent in the use of the product and the precautions to be taken having had the consequence of making its use dangerous for human health”.
More 14,000 pregnant women were exposed to the antiepileptic Depakine® between 2007 and 2014, without having been informed of the possible effects of the drug on the fetus. Remember, when taken during pregnancy, these antiepileptics can cause fetal malformations and abnormalities of the nervous and motor system of the child.
An investigating judge will therefore soon be appointed and will be responsible for conducting an in-depth criminal investigation. The investigations will cover the period from 1990 to April 2015.
