Chronic Hand Eczema (CHE) is not experienced in the same way by men and women.
- The burden of Chronic Hand Eczema is heavier for men than for women (79.5% of men report a significant level of stress linked to the disease vs. 70.2% for women).
- Likewise, the negative impact of the pathology on quality of life is greater in men than in women (48.1% of men suffer from it vs. 33.1% of women).
- Chronic Hand Eczema particularly affects adult women, because it is often caused and aggravated by household or professional products.
According to a new survey by the French Eczema AssociationChronic Hand Eczema (CHE) is not experienced in the same way by men and women.
Chronic Hand Eczema (CHE): 79.5% of affected men suffer from stress
The study thus reveals that the burden of ECM is heavier for men than for women (79.5% of men report a significant level of stress linked to the disease vs. 70.2% for women). Likewise, the negative impact of the pathology on quality of life is greater in men than in women (48.1% of men suffer from it vs. 33.1% of women).
“Regarding therapeutic compliance, 89.4% of patients with ECM follow the recommendations and treatments of their doctor regardless of the nature of the medication and the type of health professional providing care”, can also be read in the report. “On the other hand, unlike sex, the age of the patient appears to be a predictive factor of therapeutic compliance: the oldest follow the treatments more than the youngest”, details the document.
Another lesson from the survey: among the people whose quality of life is most degraded by hand eczema, 79% of patients have eczema localized on the fingers and 69.5% on the palms. Among the main symptoms associated with the skin disease, itching (73%), pain (66%), burning sensation (62%) and inflamed red hands (35%) are the most cited by respondents.
“Note that ECM often leads patients to reduce their social relationships, which can also impact quality of life,” specifies the French Eczema Association. “In the case of unilateral damage, generally more visible due to asymmetry, patients may also be tempted to isolate themselves because they fear that their other hand will be affected,” she adds.
Chronic Hand Eczema (CHE) affects more adult women
Chronic Hand Eczema is a chronic, non-contagious inflammatory dermatosis. Outside of attacks, it manifests itself as dry and porous skin. During outbreaks, the disease causes red, dry or oozing patches, vesicles, crusts and edema accompanied by severe itching (which in turn generates lesions, Editor’s note).
Chronic Hand Eczema affects more adult women, because it is often caused and aggravated by household or professional products.
Eczema in all its forms (atopic eczema, hand eczema, contact eczema) affects 2.5 million French people over the age of 18.
