“Ten cases of dengue fever have been detected in people living in Sainte-Cécile-les-Vignes in the Vaucluse department”indicates the ARS Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur in a press release published on August 22, 2024. These patients all live in the same neighborhood.
Dengue fever: cases identified from August 14
This is one of the largest outbreaks of dengue fever discovered in mainland France this year. “The declaration of a first case of dengue fever by a health professional on August 14 allowed the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Regional Health Agency to identify in the same district of this commune the case of imported dengue fever and several indigenous cases”the organization specifies.
Health authorities assure that mosquito control has been carried out on public roads and in private gardens in the municipality in order to prevent the spread of the disease transmitted by tiger mosquitoes.
“This mosquito control action was supplemented by a door-to-door survey carried out by ARS Paca and Santé publique France in around a hundred homes in the affected area in order to identify people who might have symptoms, inform them about what to do and disseminate prevention messages.”the statement added.
Dengue fever: more than 1,000 cases in mainland France since May 1
This is not the first time this year that cases of indigenous dengue fever have been observed in metropolitan France. The first was recorded in Hérault on July 8. However, the vast majority of dengue patients diagnosed in 2024 in mainland France are in reality imported cases, most often from the French West Indies where the disease is circulating widely.
According to the latest report from Public Health France published on August 21, “1,081 imported cases of dengue fever, including 957 in departments where the establishment of Aedes albopictus has been documented” between May 1 and August 20 in mainland France. “After reaching record levels, the weekly number of cases has been decreasing for several weeks, with the end of the epidemics in the Antilles”the organization specifies.
