An American study, published in the journal Anesthesia and Analgesia, found that aspirin could decrease the mortality of patients with Covid-19, but also improve the management of severe symptoms.
The study
It was conducted by doctors and scientists from the Universities of Washington and Maryland. The team wanted to evaluate the use of aspirin and find out if it is associated with “reduced risk of mechanical ventilation, intensive care unit (ICU) admission and hospital mortality”. The study involved adults admitted to several hospitals in the United States. A total of 412 patients were included in the study. The majority did not receive aspirin (76.3%) and 98 of them received it within 24 hours of admission or 7 days before admission.
The results
It turned out that the number of patients who required mechanical ventilation was lower among those who received aspirin (35.7%) compared to 48.4%. Aspirin would also reduce the risk of being admitted to intensive care: 38.8% of patients who received aspirin went to intensive care against 51%. In addition, they observed a link between the use of aspirin and a reduced risk of developing a severe form of Covid-19 disease and of death in hospital.
Conclusions
Scientists admit that randomized controlled clinical trials are needed to test whether aspirin actually reduces lung damage and mortality in patients with Covid-19.
