In France, nearly 5 million people regularly wear contact lenses. But while this vision correction device is convenient, it can also cause a number of health concerns. Indeed, poorly cleaned lenses can cause fungal or bacterial infections, and in particular infectious keratitis.
In a study published in the scientific journal Optometry and Vision Science and involving more than 110 people, a team of American researchers looked into the question. Verdict: 66% of the pairs of lenses analyzed were tested positive for the presence of infectious microorganisms … A statistic that shivers down your spine!
3 rules to avoid infections
According to the researchers, 3 rules of hygiene are essential to avoid infections. First, it is important to wash your hands well with soap and water before touching your lenses: a no-brainer! Then, do not forget to wipe their box well after cleaning it: out of the question to let it air dry. Finally, avoid mixing the brands: if your box and your disinfectant liquid are of two different brands, the risk of infection is present.
“It is essential to take care of your lens box, adds Anthony Adams, one of the authors of the study. This is indeed where the microorganisms responsible for infections thrive.” We have been warned!
