According to a recent Spanish study, eating foods rich in omega-3s leads to a better life expectancy.
The benefits of omega-3 are well established. These substances have favorable effects on the composition of cell membranes as well as on many biochemical processes of the organism: the regulation of blood pressure, the elasticity of the vessels, immune and anti-inflammatory reactions, the aggregation of platelets. blood.
But according to a new study, conducted by the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (Spain), omega-3s can also extend your life expectancy by about five years.
Decreased blood pressure or reduced morbidity
To carry out this study, scientists followed a group of 2,240 individuals aged 65 and over for eleven years. The results leave little room for doubt: the volunteers with the highest blood levels of omega-3 lived an average of 4.7 years longer than the other participants. “Being a regular smoker reduces life expectancy by around 5 years: 5 years can be regained by consuming more omega-3 on a daily basis”, commented the scientists, in their study published in the medical journal American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Nervous system, heart, retina, according to ANSES (the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety) omega-3 fatty acids are essential for our body. “Sufficient intake of omega 3 is therefore essential for women of childbearing age, pregnant women, breastfeeding women and children”.
In the cardiovascular field, scientific data also show that the consumption of omega 3 fatty acids promotes:
- Decreased blood pressure in people with high blood pressure
- A decrease in the amount of triglycerides in the blood, a type of lipid which, in excess, contributes to the development of heart disease
- In people with previous cardiovascular pathologies, a reduction in cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.
